News
---------------

Infant feeding 'may affect brain'
Nutrition in the first weeks of life could have a
profound impact on the way the brain develops, research
suggests. Premature babies fed enriched formula milk in
their first weeks consistently outperformed other
  preterm babies in IQ tests.

Seat inserts keep babies breathing
A New Zealand research team found that breathing problems
were significantly reduced when young infants were placed
in a car safety seat with a foam insert in it, designed
to help the infant's head to lie upright in a natural
  position instead of slumping forward.

Doubts over reducing class sizes
Further reductions in primary school class sizes probably
would not be good value for money, research suggests.
Cutting class sizes to 20 would cost 20,000 per class
per year, money which would be more effective invested
in closer monitoring of pupils' progress. However the
study says that small class sizes can be beneficial for
infant classes - although this would need a drop in
numbers down to classes of 15 pupils.

Motherhood 'affects women's pay'
Having children has a direct impact on women's salaries,
resulting in them being paid up to 20% less than their
  male counterparts, the TUC says.
