The Newsletter on the Under-Fives
Issue 125 : May 2015
Welcome to the May newsletter. I hope you enjoy it. This month a story about how a group of five "supermums" saved the creche at their local leisure centre by taking over the running of it themselves. Also - get a free baby signing taster session - details in the ad below.

The majority of people using the Under-Fives web site now do so with a mobile phone, with just 30% using a desktop computer. We've made it quicker to fill in forms to request more information when using a mobile, and other tweaks behind the scenes have made the website easier to use with a mobile.
Cine Babies are for parents/carers with babies under 12 months old and allow parents to bring their babies to grown up screenings. The lights are left on, (just slightly dimmed), there are no adverts and the sound is slightly lowered to create a more baby friendly environment. There is no general admittance to these screenings either, so they are exclusively for parents/carers and their babies.
New times for Movers and Shakers and Doh Ray Me. These and other music classes are now on in Ashbourne, Mayfield, Uttoxeter, Werrington, Lichfield, Fradley, Burntwood, Swadlincote, Measham, Eccleshall, Matlock, Ripley, Belper, Little Eaton, Stone, Tittensor, Darley Dale, Stretton, Bonsall, Ashover, Doxey, Stafford, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Alsager, Market Drayton, Porthill, Chesterfield, Derby and Hilton.
In December 2014, with 2 weeks notice, we found out the Council-run creche at our leisure centre was closing due to budgetary cuts - the creche which enabled us to swim, gym, do aerobics classes and play racket sports and that we were using every week.
One mum set up a facebook page to co-ordinate our objections and there was a lot of support. We emailed councillors and made representation to the meeting which was sealing the fate of our creche but, alas, it closed with a parting pledge by the Council to support us if we tried to resurrect it.
Five supermums stepped forward and after 4 months of toil, red tape and administration, that is exactly what we have done! The charity Tiny Teddies Community Creche was born and opened last month.
We are grant and donation-funded to keep the cost to parents and carers as low as possible (£2.50 per child). We employ 2 creche workers and we aim to make exercise and 'me' time at the leisure centre accessible to parents once again. Ring Ashbourne Leisure Centre 01335 343712 to book or drop in on the day; we sometimes have last-minute places available. You can also support us on Facebook.
