Pregnancy and Under-Fives News

Use of antibiotics in babies is linked to obesity

The overuse of antibiotics in young children may have fuelled the obesity epidemic, a study has suggested, after finding it affects the health of the gut.

'Scans chart how quickly babies' brains grow'

Human brains grow most rapidly just after birth and reach half their adult size within three months, according to a study in JAMA Neurology. Areas involved in movement developed at the fastest pace. Those associated with memory grew more slowly. Scientists say collating this data may help them identify early signs of developmental disorders such as autism.

New mothers can suffer with 'baby brain' four months after birth

Scientists warn about the danger of women returning to work too quickly after giving birth as study reveals new mothers suffer from baby brain and excessive tiredness 16 weeks after giving birth

Children of older mothers healthier and more mentally stable

Children of women who are over 40 have better physical and emotional health than those born to women in their 20s. Children were 22% less likely to accidentally injure themselves and nearly a third less likely to be admitted to hospital by the age of three. Language development at the ages of three and four was also better for the children of older mothers. Surprisingly parent and child conflict was found to decrease as maternal age increased.
