9 September 2020
At a playgroup, or "parent and toddlers" group you stay with your child throughout the session, which usually lasts a couple of hours. They are often run by volunteers, or by the Mums and carers themselves. Typically toys will be provided for children to play plus there will be activities like singing and craft, and outings to parks and attractions for children.
Playgroups allow your children to socialise with others, play with new toys and join in activities. They also give you the opportunity to socialise with other carers and so avoid the isolation that looking after children often involves. Children develop and learn best through play and fun activities - exactly what playgroups offer.
Some pre-schools are called playgroups. These are typically run by schools and are Ofsted inspected. They provide formal, early years, education. You can find out about these on our pre-school page.
